Paul Smith currently serves as co-pastor of Broadway Church in Kansas City, Missouri.

Previously he served several Southern Baptist churches in St. Louis while in high school and college, completing his BA in psychology at Washington University in 1959 on a full academic scholarship. During that time, he also founded and led a series of annual youth camps and college retreats that were attended by thousands of young people over a period of ten years.

After receiving a Masters degree in theology and biblical studies from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, he came to Broadway Church in midtown Kansas City in 1963 where he pastors and teaches now.

Since then, the church experienced significant and on-going change, becoming nationally recognized as a pioneer in small groups, contemporary worship, team leadership, justice issues, progressive theology, church renewal, and spiritual formation.

In 1980 he created a spiritual gifts workshop which is used around the world, with over thirty thousand copies of the materials in print including Spanish, German, and Portuguese editions. The latest online edition will be available soon.

He delivered the 1988 Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture Series at William Jewell College and has been listed in every edition of Who's Who in Religion since 1974. He was given the GLAAD Leadership Award in 1995.

Smith has taught extensively on contemporary church life in many churches and schools including St. Paul Methodist School of Theology, Unity Ministerial School, and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has given over one hundred seminars on various aspects of spiritual life around the country.

In addition to hundreds of CDs, numerous brochures, booklets, and published articles outlining his theological beliefs and practices, he contributed two chapters to the book
Enabling the Dialogue About Homosexuality. He has authored five books, The Church With Something to Offend Almost Everyone, Is It Okay To Call God Mother? Considering the feminine face of God, Making the Bible Your Friend, What the Bible Says About Homosexuality, Hell? No! Why No One Will Be Left Behind.

He has two children and three grandchildren.
